Palm Oil Is The World’s Most Efficient Oil Producing Crop

Palm oil represents over a third of all the edible oil produced in the world. This is achieved utilizing 5% of the land employed for oil and oilseed crops. Soyabean oil represents 30% of global edible oil production utilizing 42% of the land.

Palm oil yields over 4mt / hectare compared to just 0.7mt / hectare for rapeseed oil and even less for Soyabean oil. The opportunity for yield growth is higher in palm as 25 year oil plantations are replaced with higher yielding varieties. Some plantations now yield over 6 mt / hectare.

Switching from palm oil into alternative oils or products is not necessarily a sustainable answer. For this reason, all the major retailers, NGO’s and food manufacturers have committed to switching to sustainable palm oil rather than simply switching out of it.

Sustainable Palm Oil Development

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) commenced in 2004 with the aim of implementing, auditing and certifying agreed Principles and Criteria in the production of palm oil and its products to ensure long term social, economic and environmental sustainability.

The first 500mt shipment was sold in the UK in 2008 and its use has gradually increased to cover products such as biscuits, snacks, cosmetics and now animal feed.

Whilst supplies have grown, the conversion of sustainable crude palm oil into the form (derivative) needed for further production or consumption is a major challenge as the supply chain infrastructure is not available to cope with the many possible derivatives.

For example, Silver Prills is a distilled fraction of palm stearin, which itself is a fraction of refined palm oil.

Increasing the demand for sustainable palm in large consuming nations such as China and India is key to gaining a critical mass of sustainable palm oil demand to the point where constraints with supply chain infrastructure can be overcome.

GreenPalm Certificates

GreenPalm is a certificate trading platform that allows the payment of funds directly to a sustainable palm oil producer by the end user of a palm based product. Where the palm derivative is not yet available in segregated form, GreenPalm certificates are a means of ensuring the plantations who have become certified sustainable are rewarded for their efforts and their supply is met with demand. This is an important stepping stone to full segregated supply, which should be utilized by all users of palm based products.

The Future

As demand and supply increase, the palm oil and palm product supply chains will ‘tip’ at a point when conventional palm oil is displaced altogether. It is hoped this will occur in the next 2 – 3 years but slow demand uptake, particularly of GreenPalm certificates could delay this. In the meantime, it is important for us to promote the use of sustainable palm oil with our customers and suppliers. As part of ABF, AB Agri have a commitment to buy all palm products from segregated sustainable supplier should they be available.

a Division of AB Agri Limited

Trident Feeds are the wholesale division of AB Agri Limited supplying feeds and feeding solutions to merchants, blenders and compounds around the world.

Trident Feeds were the first company in the U.K. to ensure all of their palm based fat products supported the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), certifying all purchases to ensure support and funds were put back into palm production and sustainability.

This is something Trident Feeds and AB Agri are proud of, one of many sustainable solutions they have lead the way on, both in the U.K. and North America for ruminant and mono-gastric feeds.
